Background
Global Innovative and Technology Alliance (GITA) is a not-for-profit organisation promoted by Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for promotion and facilitation of International Science & Technology Cooperation Programmes for the benefit of Indian industry and institute.
The International Cooperation Division (ICD) of the DST is engaged in International Scientific and Technological Affairs including the negotiations and implementation of bilateral, multilateral and regional level Agreements with international organisations.
DST has bilateral S&T agreement with more than 70 countries and extensive work has been done with a number of countries. GITA working in public private partnership mode has been envisaged to be the dedicated autonomous outfit for making the initiatives more participative and goal oriented for benefiting larger cross section (of Industry and Institution) of the nation. ICD will continue to focus on strategy, policy and protocol matters.

Objectives
- Supporting Joint R&D for developing cutting edge technologies of national interest
- Supporting Bilateral Industrial R&D and its commercialisation
- Facilitating Technology Transfers and creation of Joint Ventures through a commercial entity
Governing Body
An apex Governing Council with Hon'ble Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences as Chief Patron, Secretary DST and President (CII) as Chairman and Co-Chairman respectively and with representatives from industry, government and institution lays down the policy guidelines for GITA and monitors its progress time to time. An Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of CEO, GITA will oversee the administrative and financial matters of GITA.
Tasks
- Country research and mapping vis-à-vis India's need/priority
- Managing bilateral/multilateral collaborative R&D Programmes and Partnership Development Activities like exploratory missions of scientific delegations, collaborative workshops, study visits etc.
- Support to Indian Industry and Institutions to network with Global S&T organizations and industries
- Providing information and hand-holding support to foreign investors in R&D in India
- Establishment of Joint Centres of Excellence
